How to set healthy boundaries: The Aura Guide

Recently, I was asked to clear up some confusion around the functionality and purpose of the aura. Are holes good or bad? What exactly does the aura do? How can I tell if my aura is healthy?

But before we dive into the details of creating healthy energetic boundaries, I want to ask you a few questions (surprise: establishing healthy boundaries is a KEY function of the aura!): 

Do you get tired easily and often? Are you constantly sick? Do you seem to feel other people’s emotions as if they’re your own? Are you easily overwhelmed?

Your invisible boundary, otherwise known as your aura, may be the culprit for your low energy levels, shaky health, emotional wellbeing, stress levels and so much more.

So, what does the aura do exactly?

Just like your skin protects your delicate organs, tissue, and veins from everyday dangers that could cause serious damage to your internal health and wellbeing, your aura provides a similar level of protection for your highly sensitive and fragile energy body. 

Unlike your skin which has an alarm system built-in if it’s injured in any way (hello pain!), knowing when your aura is damaged or weak can pose a significant challenge because there isn’t an immediate physical indicator that alerts you when your energetic boundaries are compromised. Instead, you’re forced to pick up on subtle clues that tell you something is off (more on that soon), or you must develop a habit of reinforcing your aura and securing your energetic boundaries on your own (more on how to do that soon).

What are the symptoms of an unhealthy aura?

In order to understand what an unhealthy aura looks like, it’s probably helpful to first know how a healthy one functions.


A healthy aura is like a snow globe around your entire body with thick walls top to bottom, front to back, side to side and stretches about the distance of your arm span all the way around you. 

A strong aura is egg-like in shape and can change color and form depending on your mood, your physical health, and the characteristics of your environment. It’s a living, moving, highly sensitive energy boundary that can become compromised whenever you feel threatened, unsafe, angry, or if there is a lack of awareness of the space around you, particularly the space behind you. 

With a healthy aura, you will feel safe in your environment, confident in your life and in yourself, safe and free to express your voice and speak up for yourself, and a sense of empowerment will be felt around your ability to support your needs. 

Symptoms of an unhealthy aura include not feeling like yourself, getting tired very easily and often, constantly feeling overwhelmed or like life is too much, you may have gotten sick recently or are sick more often than usual, or you may tend to take on the emotions of others. 

If you are a very empathic person and feel the pain of someone who stubs their toe in your own foot or take on the emotional anguish of a distraught friend, you may have a weak aura. If your aura has become imbalanced, you may start to feel overly emotional, sick, exhausted, overwhelmed, fearful, unsupported, or like you’ve lost your grip on life. 

Here is a list to illustrate a balanced vs. unbalanced aura:


  • You feel safe in your environment

  • You’re confident in pursuing your goals

  • You feel energized throughout your day

  • You are physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy

  • You maintain comfortable boundaries with others and the world around you


  • You get sick easily and often

  • You physically feel others’ pain or suffering

  • You struggle to stay grounded

  • You consider yourself “too” sensitive

  • You feel “off” or not like yourself

  • You get tired very easily

  • You’re easily overwhelmed 

What causes an aura to become damaged?

Generally, rips or slashes appear in the aura after a disagreeable interaction with a male, while holes can appear after a disagreeable interaction with a female. A weak or open aura can be caused if the energy body and/or energetic boundaries have been neglected for great periods of time, or when a person is overly focused on the future.

Without proper care and maintenance, your aura can become damaged, filled with rips, tears, or holes of varying shapes and sizes, become oblong in shape, or become nonexistent in places, exposing your delicate energy body to your environment. Arguments with loved ones or coworkers, witnessing something that causes emotional pain, being criticized or yelled at, stress, and chaotic environments are a few examples of situations that can negatively impact the shape, color, and density of your aura. 

So how do you care for this invisible boundary we call the aura when you can’t see or immediately feel when something has gone awry?

That, my friend, starts with having an awareness of what causes damage to the aura in the first place, followed by guidelines for practicing healthy energy hygiene.

Guidelines for practicing healthy energy hygiene

Maintaining a healthy aura is easier than you may think. If you’re willing to set aside 60-seconds every day to check in with yourself, you have enough time to strengthen the energetic boundary that is your aura.

Check out the list below to learn which activities can strengthen or weaken your aura:

Activities that strengthen an aura

  • Meditation and setting intentions around your boundaries

  • Setting verbal boundaries with others

  • Respecting your needs and desires (ex. Resting when you feel tired)

  • Visualizing a strong, protective barrier around you (see visualization)

Activities that weaken an aura

  • Negativity

  • Unresolved arguments or conflicts with others

  • Hurtful or cruel language directed at you or overheard

  • Chaotic environments (ex. traffic or busy airports, COVID life)


Close your eyes and visualize your favorite flower. Notice how it smells, what color it is, the size and shape of its petals. Now imagine your aura full, and strong around your body. Visualize your aura’s perimeter blossoming with your favorite flower, thousands of fragrant, colorful flowers expanding across the entire surface of your aura to create a cozy, safe cocoon for yourself, nestled inside. Ensure the front, back, sides, top, and bottom are lovingly coated in your favorite flower, so there are no gaps or bald spots.

Use this visualization to reinforce the strength and density of your aura throughout your day.

  • What does my body feel like in a vulnerable state?

  • How will I know when I need to support myself and repair my aura?

  • What does it feel like when my aura is whole and strong around me?
