The ultimate guide to understanding your chakras

Chakras are centers of energetic power which govern the health of your emotional, physical and psychological wellbeing.

Your external life is a reflection of the strength and balance of your chakras. When all of your chakras are balanced you will feel happy, energized, powerful, free, loved, secure and fulfilled and your body will function better physically, mentally and emotionally.

So, how can you diagnose your chakras today?

Check out the guide I created for you below to learn about each chakra’s (there are seven) location and how the chakras relate to your health and wellbeing.

1st–Root chakra

Do you have the ability to receive everything you need to survive such as food, water, and shelter? Have you found a community where you feel safe, connected, secure, and protected? Are you financially secure? Are you satisfied in your work or with your career?

Located at the base of your spine, your first chakra controls your feet, legs, bones, rectum, hips, spine, lower back and nervous system.

The health of your first chakra determines your general health, ability to ground or connect into the earth, and your basic survival needs. If your first chakra is balanced, you experience prosperity in your life and in your work; you feel connected or grounded with the earth and are healthy.

If your first chakra is not balanced you may experience chronic lower back pain, sciatica, varicose veins, rectal tumors, depression (specifically related to lack of physical support) or immune related disorders. In your life you may feel nervous, stress around your career or finances, have low energy, and can feel alone in the world, lacking a sense of community or home.

2nd–Sacral Chakra

Can you clearly express your emotions in a healthy way?  Do you have healthy relationships? Can you express yourself creatively? Do you know what brings you pleasure? Can you attract pleasurable experiences or things into your life?

Located below your navel, your second chakra controls your bladder, kidneys, and reproductive system.

The health of your second chakra determines your ability to express your emotions, have healthy relationships, express yourself creatively, and feel powerful in your sexuality. This chakra deals with creativity in all aspects of life (creation of a baby, project, business, art, etc.) and helps you think of creative solutions for issues in your life. Your second chakra represents your power in the external world in relation to finances, sexuality, and relationships. If your second chakra is balanced, you have an understanding of what brings you pleasure and have the ability to attract the things you find pleasurable into your life.

If your second chakra is not balanced you may experience OB/GYN issues (cramps/bloating, mood swings, etc.), sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal issues (constipation, diarrhea, gas), chronic low back pain, sciatica, or urinary problems. In your life you may lack an understanding of what brings you joy, have an inability to feel safe, have depression, struggle to balance your emotions or struggle with self-sufficiency.

3rd–Solar Plexus

Can you make your own decisions? Do you have high self-esteem? Are you able to remember your dreams?

Located above your navel, your third chakra controls your stomach, pancreas, liver, spine, intestines, and your digestive system.

The health of your third chakra determines your personal power in connection with your self-esteem, ambition, and self-respect. This chakra deals with personal empowerment and monitors whether you’re living your life in accordance with your beliefs instead of getting tangled in the ideas and belief systems of others. If your third chakra is balanced you believe in yourself and your ability to succeed, are able to follow through with your goals and can recall your dreams.

If your third chakra is not balanced you may experience indigestion, eating disorders, mid-back pain, lethargy/morning fatigue, liver dysfunction, or gastric ulcers. In your life you may have difficulty making decisions, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, or low self-respect and tend to take your anger out on others. You may feel over-sensitive to criticism, experience power struggles or feel victimized due to inner feelings of inadequacy. You may struggle to set goals or follow through with your goals. The third chakra is often where you get the sensation of butterflies in your stomach.

4th–Heart chakra

Do you have integrity in your relationships? Are you able to forgive? Do you have love for yourself and others?

Located in the middle of your chest, your fourth chakra controls your heart, thymus, shoulders, arms, hands, and lungs.

A healthy fourth chakra helps you heal emotional pain, forgive others and release a desire for justice. Your fourth chakra is where you get in touch with divine love to keep an open, loving heart. It is also the place that cleanses your other chakras of negative energy or emotions, allowing you to design a life full of things you love. If your fourth chakra is balanced you practice compassion and are able to create a life full of the things you love effortlessly, as if by magic.

If your fourth chakra is not balanced you may experience severe heath issues or cancer in your heart, breasts, or lungs. You may have pneumonia or asthma. In your life you could have feelings of loss, grief, or vengeance. You may have an inability to feel love or compassion and struggle to forgive.

5th–Throat chakra

Do you ask for what you want? Do you express your feelings? Are you afraid to assert yourself? Are you honest? Do you allow yourself to cry?

Located at your throat, your fifth chakra controls your communication and creative expression.

A healthy fifth chakra helps you express your unique voice truthfully, honestly, and authentically. You are able to ask for what you want and allow the needs and desires of your third chakra (personal power) to be expressed externally. If your fifth chakra is balanced you can express yourself, your desires, thoughts, feelings, needs, and creative ideas fearlessly.

If your fifth chakra is not balanced you may experience a sore throat or coughing, laryngitis, thyroid issues, or pain in your jaw, mouth, teeth or gums. In your life you struggle, or choose not to communicate your needs, desires, beliefs or have difficulty sharing your feelings. You often doubt your creative talents or abilities.

6th–Third eye chakra

Have you begun harnessing the power of your mind? Can you tap into your inner knowingness and perceive the truth of people and situations?

Located at your forehead just above your eyebrows, your sixth chakra controls your neurological system, brain, eyes, ears, and nose.

A healthy sixth chakra helps you dream big and awaken your intuitive abilities such as knowing, clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, etc. so you can heal yourself and create your ideal life. This chakra helps you perceive the truth of people and situations, maintain a balance between intuition and analytical thought, conscious and subconscious thought. If your sixth chakra is balanced you have a clear sense of who you are, feel comfortable with your intuition, believe in the power of your mind and the infinite possibilities and opportunities that exist for you.

If your sixth chakra is not balanced you may experience issues with your nervous system, headaches or migraines, or discomfort in or around your ears, eyes, or nose. In your life, you may be very critical and rely on logic while discounting your intuition or inspiration. You may frequently doubt yourself and experience a lack of meaning in your life. You may have a fear of introspection, or looking inside yourself to experience your own intuitive skills. You may be unwilling to learn from your life experiences, which often causes you to blame others for things that go wrong in your life.

7th–Crown chakra

Do you feel like your life has purpose? Do you feel connected to or have a sense of your personal spirituality? Do you know who you are? Can you see the bigger picture in life?

Located just above the top of your head, your seventh chakra controls your brain and nervous system.

The seventh chakra is the entryway of our life force energy, or spiritual light, and affects the health of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. A healthy seventh chakra has a strong connection with spirit helping you develop an understanding of your spiritual purpose. If your seventh chakra is balanced you understand and accept the truth of who you really are on a spiritual level.

If your seventh chakra is not balanced you may experience headaches or migraines, brain tumors, osteoporosis, skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis), and issues connected to brain function or your nervous system. In your life you may have an inability to express yourself or experience self-doubt and are disconnected from spirituality.
